I was about five, standing at my dad's desk in Cooper Pest, moving magnets around a board, ending up with what was not done for the week. I thought it was the coolest job in the world. So of course I ended up running the company. My brother and I took it over . From 1984 to 2015, 31 years, we grew from half a million to five million dollars.

We did amazing things, won all kinds of awards. But I was also the hardest-working bottleneck in my own company, every decisions ran through me, and I mistook being busy for being in charge. Even after I fixed that, we were only growing about 7% a year. My leadership team wasn't on the same page, and honestly, I felt stuck.

Then we found EOS in 2015. Same company, same people and in three years we went from five million to eleven. We doubled, and in 2018 we sold to Terminix.

I'm not a guy who read about this in a book. I built it, ran it, and sold it. I've been there, with a million bumps and bruises to show for it. I know that trap firsthand. For years I was the one standing in my own way. So these days I sit alongside other leadership teams, all in without sugarcoating things, because I actually care how it turns out for them.

And helping others find their way out is the best work I've done.
